Celebrating a Half Century of Music, Mystery and Reinvention
"Fleetwood Mac has meant so many things to so many people," Mick Fleetwood told me a few years back while discussing the band that he has dedicated so much of his life to keeping time for and somehow always keeping moving forward over these past five decades. "This band has done so many different things musically for so long - and involved so many talented musicians along the way - that the through line can get a little confusing to the people who love Fleetwood Mac. Sometimes it can even get a little confusing for the people in Fleetwood Mac."
50 YEARS: DON'T STOP is an excellent new way for all of us who have loved Fleetwood Mac forever to cut through any confusion, more fully explore and enjoy many of the very high points of this group's whole long, sometimes strange but more often inspiring, trip through time. Gathered together here is a wide range of notable tracks recorded over the last half century under the Fleetwood Mac banner. This represents a deep penguin dive into one of rock's most enduring bands and most compelling musical mysteries. In addition to featuring many of the group's greatest hits, 50 YEARS: DON'T STOP takes an expansive view of the many things Fleetwood Mac has meant to music lovers, reflecting the long dance Fleetwood Mac was doing way before The Dance and retracing the long chain that existed even before the magical strength of "The Chain."
So what ties together all this remarkable music? After all, early on, Fleetwood Mac started out as a relatively traditional blues rock combo from England. But after its first golden era ended abruptly with the surprising and even shocking departure of early guitarist and front man Peter Green, Fleetwood Mac itself became a kind of daring act of improvisation and reinvention, featuring name partners and rhythm section leaders Mick Fleetwood and John MeVie and a remarkable procession of other players coming and going.
Fleetwood Mac then played on with Jeremy Spencer and Danny Kirwin stepping up to fill the breach, and even most illustriously, the gifted Christine Perfect (soon to be McVie) becoming a core member of the group for decades to come. Heroes can indeed be hard to find, but in the early Seventies an American in Paris named Bob Welch would play a leading role for a few years before departing and thus setting the stage for Fleetwood Mac's greatest Second Coming of all.
As the track listing here suggests, for millions of Fleetwood Mac fans all around the world, the band was brilliantly redefined by the game-changing arrival of Lindsey Buckingham and Stevie Nicks in 1974 and the remarkable success story that would play out over the decades to come as they, along with Fleetwood, John McVie, and Christine MeVie, took the Fleetwood Mac name to previously unimaginable heights and lasting global success.
Yet as the band's extraordinary and sometimes wild track record over half a century suggests, the Fleetwood Mac story has always been a surprising and complicated one, and the songs collected on this new anthology reflect times when the band has continued to play on, despite notable departures and returns, all while somehow continuing to shake their moneymakers and sing and play another day.
How on Earth have Fleetwood Mac done it all and survived it all?
Sometimes it's a mystery to me — one that can lead us all to throw up our hands and just say "Oh well," like Peter Green did about 50 years ago today. Yet after all this time, after all the rumours, perhaps the strongest answer of all may be the actual secret of life that was best explained by the title of a song written by Christine MeVie many, many years ago.
Don't Stop.
