Back in 2021, the last time I attended BottleRock, Stevie Nicks was supposed to headline (she was also booked to headline in 2020, before that festival was cancelled outright), but cancelled at the last minute due to Covid concerns, so then Chris Stapleton (who I didn't care for) was booked in her place, which I found disappointing. But then he also cancelled at the last second, and The Highwomen were booked to fill in. I was pissed I missed Stevie, but happy that I could go watch James Murphy with no conflict now.
Anyway, fast forward 2 and a half years, and Stevie Nicks (thankfully) is still out and touring/performing and was booked again, for a third time, to try and headline and thankfully the third time is always the charm, as she performed flawlessly on Friday night and proved some things are worth waiting for. This set was basically a greatest hits set, as expected, and the crowd was loving it. I got to the main stage about a half hour before St. Vincent (who I also recorded) and found it to be pretty empty which surprised me. It was very easy to walk up and get a spot in front of the soundboard and close to the side rail (I was practically dead center).
Looking around, the economics of the festival and the crowd separation become really apparent. The main stage field (as well as the second stage field) are surrounded by covered grandstands/skydecks and all the fancy VIP/"Platinum" (I actually don't know how many VIP levels they have at this festival, but it's a lot I think) people watch the show from there. One artist commented that it looked like the Kentucky Derby from the stage, or even Wimbledon (pointing to the skydecks), though he said he better stop commenting before he gets in trouble, ha! I remember looking out before Stevie came on stage, up to the skydecks and saw one guy standing there with his wife (well I assume it was his wife) dressed in slacks, a button up shirt and dress shoes, and I just thought to myself, who the hell attends a music festival dressed up like that? We are a long way from the hippies at Woodstock, and I realized that this is just how Napa and Bottlerock roll. They're able to put this festival on because they're littered with sponsorships all over and cater to the super rich, who dress in suits to the festival, and where a Platinum wristband is just pennies from a coffee can for them, compared to us festival bums out in the infield. But then again, do I really care how one spends their money or time at a festival these days? I suppose not. I'm just grateful the festival is taking place, the bands are booked and playing, and I'm there in my favorite spot, out in the GA crowd with all the other "festival bums". It's home for me.
Anyway, Stevie sounded great, looked great and I'm so happy I finally got to see her and get to scratch her off my list (a lot of artists got scratched off my list this weekend finally, so thank you BottleRock!). She didn't have any special guests (was hoping for Eddie Vedder maybe) except her vocal coach, Steve Real, on "Leather and Lace", but her visuals were great, her costume changes (or whatever you wanna call them) were great, and overall I'm happy that 4 years after the Covid cancellations she was able to finally put on the headlining set we had all been waiting for. Well worth the wait.
