Sleeve Notes
AFTER EIGHT YEARS OF RECORDING AND TOURING, Fleetwood Mac was still aiming for its big breakthrough in 1975. While the band had scored British hits and built a solid American following, lineup changes and legal hassles had plagued them along the way. The addition of Lindsey Buckingham and Stevie Nicks in late 1974 provided a fresh injection of energy. Still, there were no guarantees that the revitalized quintet would build upon its past success when it hit the road for an extensive US. tour.
The live set compiled here taken from October 75 shows in Passaic, New Jersey and Storrs, Connecticut -testifies to Fleetwood Mac's renewed focus and raw power. The band sounds tight and aggressive, with drummer Mick Fleetwood and bassist John McVie providing supple rhythmic underpinning to Buckingham's ferocious guitar work and Christine McVie's sparse, evocative keyboands. The set list is a mix of older tunes and newer material, emphasizing the continuity between the Mac's blues-based past and its beckoning pop/rock future.
Christine's "Get Like You Used to Be" (a bluesy romp from her pre-Mac solo days) kicks things off, followed by the smoldering rocker Station Man, first heard on the band's 1970 LP Kiln House and sung here by Lindsey and Stevie. "Spare Me A Little" a winsome ballad from 1972's Bare Trees, is another Christine showcase that features Stevie on backup vocals. The set fully catches fire with Nicks' soon-to-be signature song "Rhiannon," sung by Stevie with a palpable intensity that escalates into an explosive finale over nearly eight minutes. Christine reclaims the mic for the bittersweet "Why" (from 1973's Mystery To Me), handing it back to Stevie for "Landslide," another sublime Nicks tune destined to become a classic. Lindsey holds the spotlight for the anguished "I'm So Afraid" and his blistering take on "Oh Well (from 1969's Then Play On). He and Stevie bring a simmering spookiness to "The Green Manalishi (With the Two Prong Crown)" a 1970 U.K. hit single for the band. "World Turning" -Christine and Lindsey's first song collaboration adds a stomping courtry-rock element that leads into "Blue Letter" a soaring showcase for Lindsey and Stevie's vocal harmonies. Lindsey reaches back to his duo days with Stevie for the twang-filled "Don't Let Me Down Again" before ending the concert on a spacey jazz-tinged note with Hypnotized (from Mystery To Me).
Listening to this galvanizing set, you can hear Fleetwood Mac staking out its claim to rock superstardom in real time. This album captures them at a pivotal moment, one that hasn't lost its magic 50 years on.
